Stafelter Tunnel

Construction of a 1,650m tunnel and a 200ml covered section

The Stafelter tunnel, which connects the Waldhaff interchange in the south and to the Heeschdrëfferbierg plateau in the north, consists of two two-lane tubes.

Its underground length is 1,850m, including 1,650m of tunnel and 200m of covered section.

Works carried out

Félix Giorgetti was responsible for the following:

  • Platforms for site installation;
  • Earthworks for the north and south entrances and the covered section;
  • Road works outside and inside the tunnel;
  • Arrangement of tunnel heads.

The 1,650m were excavated from the only southern portal with staggered excavations on both fronts.

The Stafelter Tunnel has a horseshoe profile and was dug according to the principles of the Austrian N.A.T.M. method. This method was developed during the years 1957-1965 and the general idea is to use the intact rock around the tunnel to stabilise the structure.
